In 1975, Don José Luna developed a handcrafted recipe on visits to the distilleries of the Jalisco Highlands. Made from 100% Blue Weber agave and nothing else, it was tequila the way it was always meant to be — pure, smooth, and full of character.
For years it never left the family. His son, "Pops," carried it across the border to San Diego in Manzanita apple-soda jugs.
Don José's grandson, Miguel “Chiky” Luna, played professional indoor soccer for the San Diego Sockers — the most decorated franchise in U.S. indoor soccer. He brought water bottles filled with the family tequila to games, and after every win it became the locker-room ritual.
From the locker room it spread to family and friends, and from friends to something bigger.
What began as celebrations in soccer locker rooms — sharing Chiky's family tequila after hard-fought victories — grew into a shared vision with his head coach and longtime friend, Phil Salvagio.
Together they turned a family secret into a brand — the same recipe, the same patience, now bottled in the Highlands and poured across California.
CaliFino is Mexican-American owned and operated — and unlike many tequila brands, we own and operate our own distillery in the Highlands of Jalisco. Every step is ours: harvesting, distillation, aging, bottling and final presentation.
Three generations on, the rule has not changed.
"We didn't set out as industry guys trying to create another tequila brand. CaliFino grew out of friendship and years of celebrating life together. We wanted to create something authentic that we'd be proud to share with our own family and friends."
Long before it was a marketing term, it was simply how the Luna family made tequila: 100% Blue Weber agave, water, and time. No glycerin, no flavouring, no colouring — nothing else.
